My eyeballs almost fell out of my head! IKEA had just announced yet another kitchen sale before the end of 2016!
Way in July, when we bought the house, we were dreaming about our new kitchen being done before Christmas. A white Christmas all around, inside and out! The first time we set foot into the house, Adrian was like “this kitchen needs a gut job!” Sure, the countertop is the ugliest pink granite and there’s that weird brick-oven-stove-thingie that was blocking the view. But let’s be honest, it could have been much worse.
With a kitchen sale going on during Summer, we kissed our chances good-bye and were hoping that IKEA would soon announce a sale the following Spring. So yes, it was a bit of a shock. A good shock!
We had always loved the look and feel of a white kitchen. A happy, welcoming space where you want to spend lots of time in. We were torn between the Bodbyn & Ringhult styles, which are total opposites if you’re familiar with them. Deep inside I knew what this house needed. The sleek high gloss farmhouse kitchen style of Ringhult. A bold choice that lends some serious contrast to the 226 year old house!
In the beginning I was completely sold on going matte black for handles, light fixtures – heck, everything I could get my grubby hands on! Black black black! And then, one day, I had a brain flash. Black would make the already gloomy room even colder. So I branched out and started to consider brass. Total opposite, again. It started to make sense and the whole design began to come together. The brass just helps so much with highlighting the warmer tones. It’s pretty amazing, actually.
Another huge piece of the puzzle was the backsplash situation. I was dead set on going with cheap subway tiles. But I never really ‘felt’ those tiles. I started to think outside the box and BAM! a new idea was born. Why not put in some pretty plank walls instead? That would give the kitchen that charm back, and let’s face it, with high-gloss cabinet fronts you need all the charm you can get LOL
So that’s about where we are right now. We have a pretty solid design plan. Yes, we still have some items that need a little more brainstorming. Like the upper cabinet situation. But all in all it’s looking really good so far! A white high gloss farmhouse kitchen with IKEA’s Ringhult cabinet fronts, brass handles, a plank wall backsplash and honed marble countertops!
